Philadelphia 76ers rookie Ben Simmons is scheduled to have surgery after a Jones fracture of the fifth metatarsal bone in his right ankle, sources tell ESPN's Marc Stein.

The team was previously weighing their options with the injury, but opted for surgery for precautionary measures.

The No. 1 overall pick is expected to miss about three months, a source told ESPN's Jeff Goodman, which means he would be scheduled to return to action in December or maybe even January, depending on how he heals.

This injury happened when Simmons landed on Shawn Long‘s foot when he heard something pop and his foot started to swell afterward. The team initially thought he had just rolled his ankle, but later discovered it was a much more serious injury.

The 20-year-old had recently put on 33 pounds during the offseason, weighing around 240 pounds in efforts to get his body ready for the contact he'll face in the league.

The Sixers will surely miss Ben Simmons' presence on the floor as they look to develop his skills as the centerpiece of the team.

“I never played with somebody [like him],” teammate Dario Saric told Philadelphia reporters this week. “Everybody puts pressure on him, but I think he'll handle this.”‎
