The San Francisco 49ers are entering a crucial 2024 season. They have been one of the NFC's best teams for several seasons in a row, but they haven't been able to cash that in for a Super Bowl victory. San Francisco is hopeful that they can get at least one championship with their strong roster of players. One former NFL QB is skeptical of 49ers QB Brock Purdy after a recent spat of interceptions during training camp practice.

Purdy threw three interceptions at practice on Monday before throwing four more on Tuesday. He addressed the media on Wednesday about the interceptions.

“It’s a fine line,” Purdy said on KNBR, via 49erswebzone.com. “You want to go out, you want to be efficient. You want to go through reads and obviously protect the ball and whatnot. But right now is the time for us to go out and—you always hear the quarterback say experiment—but that’s really what it is. Can I fit it in this window on this hitch? Can I look off Fred [Warner] or [Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles] or [De’Vondre Campbell] in a certain way and then make that throw backside? You’ve got to try it out.”

Former NFL QB Chris Simms believes that Purdy is right on some level about experimentation during practice. However, he thinks that seven interceptions in two padded practices is far too many.

“In the game and in the season, it comes down to protecting the ball every snap, every play, so you can’t necessarily try those things out,” Purdy continued. “Right now, we can, and so my mindset right now is protect the ball, but let’s be aggressive. Let’s try this out. Let’s figure it out. And so, obviously, I want to go through my reads, check the ball down, and work on that as well because that’s real, that’s football. But there’s a time and a place where I’m like, ‘Hey, you know what? This is practice, and I’m going to drop back and try this out.’ And then you figure out [whether] it could be a part of your game or not for the season.”

49ers tight end George Kittle believes Brock Purdy is primed to take his game to the next level in 2024

49ers tight end George Kittle is a big believer in his QB.

Kittle talked up Brock Purdy in a recent interview on KNBR on Wednesday, via 49ers Web Zone. He believes that Purdy has what it takes to elevate his game in 2024.

“I feel like he's just more comfortable with the offense,” Kittle said. “He seems very comfortable with it, and he seems like he's taking it and making it his offense. Just his confidence in the pocket, throwing the ball, telling guys, ‘Hey, you need to do this. You need to push your route depth here. Yeah, you need to run out of it.'”

Purdy has greatly exceeded expectations in San Francisco, so it is hard to tell where his ceiling actually is as a player. He has extra motivation in 2024 as he could earn a massive contract extension with a strong year.

“He just has this confidence,” Kittle said. “And he just has this, like, ‘This is my job.' And it's not something that—I want to say you're always fighting for your job, but he's like, ‘I'm making this job better. I'm getting better while I'm out here.'”
