Los Angeles Chargers star quarterback Justin Herbert has suffered a foot injury that has received more details per the team on their X, formerly Twitter, account. After Wednesday's practice, Herbert was diagnosed with “an injury to the plantar fascia in his right foot.”

The Chargers would then state that “doctors have recommended approximately two weeks in a boot — followed by a graduated return to play protocol — with the expectation that he will be ready for the start of the regular season.” While it's always a concern to see their most important player hurt, he should be ready to go for the season opener against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, Sept. 8.

Herbert suffered some injuries last season that held him back, even a finger injury that ruled him out for the remainder of the season in 2023 as he had surgert. While he was looking for a fully healthy year in 2024, the foot issue will for sure hold him back at the moment as he played 13 games for Los Angeles last season resulting in diminishing returns.

Now that Herbert will be sidelined for the foreseeable future, the Chargers will have to look elsewhere at the position to lead them in first team reps in preparation for the start of the season. In the depth chart at the current moment is Easton Stick, Max Duggan, and Casey Bauman where the first name listed appeared in five games in Herbert's absence.

Chargers training camp had a burst of energy with Herbert and Harbaugh

It is also the first season under Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh where fans and people within the football world were excited to see if Herbert can reach his full potential with a proven winner at the professional and college level. Despite the shortened season, Herbert threw for 3,134 yards to go along with 20 touchdowns and seven interceptions as before the injury, Harbaugh had the thought process of training camp being like “New Year's Day.”

“It's like New Year's Day. It feels like being born. It feels like coming out of the womb,” Harbaugh said to ESPN. “You're in there. It's comfortable and safe, and now you're out. You're born. Lights are on, it's bright, chaos, people looking at you, people talking at you, and it just feels good to have it happen.”

If there was one player that was bought in to what Harbaugh was putting down, it was Herbert as the two were expected to be a dangerous combo for any team to face against. The 26-year old signal-caller would say that he will “support whatever he says.”

“I'll leave the analogies to him,” Herbert said. “He's done a great job at creating those, so I'll support whatever he says. We're just out there playing football, and my job is to throw the ball, so that's what I'm going to worry about.”

At any rate, it remains to be seen if the estimation will hold true if Herbert will be ready by Week 1, but the Chargers are looking to improve after a 5-12 finish which put them last in the AFC West.
