The Cleveland Browns have received an encouraging update on the rehab status of quarterback Baker Mayfield. After going under the knife to address an injury on his left shoulder, the 26-year-old appears to be progressing at a quicker rate than initially expected.

According to Mary Cay Cabot of cleveland.com (paywalled), the Browns QB is currently ahead of his rehab schedule. Mayfield underwent surgery on Jan. 19 and now that he's around 6 weeks into his rehab, all signs are pointing towards a full and early recovery by the former Oklahoma standout.

Earlier reports stated that Mayfield was given a timetable of four to six months on his road to recovery. Even if he ends up on the far end of this timetable, he should still be ready to start for the Browns once the new season kicks off in September. Right now, however, it's sounding like Mayfield is going to be able to get back to full strength sooner rather than later.

It is worth noting, though, that a starting spot for next season is not yet guaranteed for Mayfield. He did not exactly have an exceptional campaign in 2021 and Cleveland could very well be in the market for an upgrade at the QB post.
