It did not take long for the Cleveland Browns to designate quarterback Tyrod Taylor as the starter ahead of Baker Mayfield. As a result, it appears Mayfield will take on a full-fledged backup role.
There was some speculation that the rookie could still get some reps in with the starters in training camp. However, head coach Hue Jackson indicated that will not necessarily be the case, according to Nate Ulrich of Ohio.com:
Article Continues Below“I don’t envision any situation where all of a sudden [Mayfield will be] getting a bunch of first-team reps unless, God forbid, something happens,” Jackson said. “But at the same time, there might be a day — please nobody hold me to it — where Tyrod all of a sudden maybe doesn’t go and Baker’s out there and people go, ‘Oh, my gosh.’ It wouldn’t be that. You know what I’m saying? Let’s not turn that into, ‘Now [Mayfield is] going to be the starter.’ That’s not what it is. I’m committed to making this work the way that we have it because I think it’s what’s best for the organization. I think it’s what’s best for [Mayfield]. If the player supersedes that, it will show itself.”
It is not unusual for teams to split first-team reps if there is a potential position battle brewing. However, it is clear that the Browns brought Taylor in with the intention of starting right away.
Some could see Mayfield's current status as a potential cause for concern. It goes without saying that No. 1 overall picks are expected to make an immediate impact on the team. His inability to garner any first-team reps could be a bit discouraging.
However, it is indicative of how Cleveland plans to handle Mayfield's progression. The Browns have a number of moving parts that still need to be put together. Having a bonafide starting quarterback like Taylor will give them a better chance to compete while Mayfield gets accustomed to the next level. That said, it seems they will try their best not to overwhelm the rookie so early on.
