Josh McDaniels nearly returned to the role of head coach during the NFL offseason with the Indianapolis Colts, but in a surprising move decided to turn down the offer to remain the offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots. Now, there is speculation that he could be interested in becoming a head coach again.

According to speculation from Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, McDaniels could consider the Cleveland Browns' head coaching position if it were offered to him.

McDaniels, who apparently decided in February to stay with the Patriots until Bill Belichick retires, possibly could be lured back to his home state of Ohio by the presence of a 15-year quarterback and a blank-slate legacy that includes an empty trophy case. If Dorsey is interested and McDaniels isn’t, it’s possible that McDaniels will indeed never leave New England.

Josh McDaniels would be an intriguing choice for the Browns. Hue Jackson was fired after a rough tenure as the head coach, but the team is young and has plenty of talent to work with.

Baker Mayfield has taken over the reigns as the starting quarterback in Cleveland. He has already shown star potential and is without question one of the best young quarterbacks in the game.

Cleveland also has quite a bit of other young talent on the roster. Nick Chubb has become the starting running back, while Myles Garrett has anchored a talented defense. Denzel Ward is also a key piece of the defense.

New England has made it clear that McDaniels is the heir apparent to Bill Belichick. If he did decide to leave, it would have to be for an opportunity that provides McDaniels a long-term picture that convinces him that they can contend.

Expect to see the Browns make a run at a big name or two. They cannot afford to miss again on their next head coach and McDaniels could very well end up being one of their top candidates.
