The Washington Capitals season came to a crashing end a couple of weeks ago. Despite playing like the better team for much of the series, the Capitals lost to the President’s Trophy-winning Florida Panthers in six games. The Capitals had a great regular season, reaching 100 points. However, with how deep the Eastern Conference was this year, that was only good enough for the eighth seed and a difficult matchup.

In the first game of that series, the Capitals lost right winger Tom Wilson, who tore his ACL. On Wednesday, Washington announced that Wilson underwent successful surgery to repair the torn ACL in his left knee. Wilson’s recovery timetable is listed as six to eight months.

“My summer sucks now… It’s going to be a grind for me. I’ve got to start my recovery,” Wilson said after the surgery.

Wilson was injured trying to hit Florida Panthers defenseman MacKenzie Weegar in the first period of Game 1 of the Eastern Conference first round series. The winger is coming off of a career year in Washington. He scored a career-high 24 goals and 52 points in 78 games played. He also was a boost to the Capitals’ special teams with 10 power play points this year.

The recovery time is expected to force Wilson to miss the start of the Capitals season in October.

Washington is looking to run mostly run it back next season. Goalie Ilya Samsonov is a restricted free agent. Defenseman Justin Schultz and center Marcus Johannson are unrestricted free agents. But the rest of the Capitals’ core is in tact.
