New Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Al Holcomb likes what he sees with the pieces he has on his defense. As Bob McManaman of AZCentral.com notes, Holcomb used the word “special” to describe some of the talents he will have at his disposal on defense.

Holcomb used it in reference to star cornerback Patrick Peterson’s ability to shut down an entire side of the field:

“Yeah, I mean, that’s special. It’s really special to know you have a cornerback on the edge of the defense that can cover and take away some of the better receivers in this league.

He also used it on his pass rush tandem of Chandler Jones and Markus Golden:

“I think that’s special. We’re going to line up and stop the run every week, and that’s going to be the main objective. But we know this league has some great quarterbacks in it and you have to have the element of being able to rush the passer, which those guys do. … It’s a great starting point for us.”

Holcomb will definitely have a strong foundation to build upon in Arizona. The Cardinals defense has consistently been strong against the run and has ranked in the top six in total yards allowed in each of the last three seasons.

And apart from Peterson, Jones, and Golden, they also have the likes of Tyrann Mathieu, Deone Bucannon, Budda Baker, Robert Nkemdiche, and Hasson Reddick as potential playmakers on that defense.

With all that talent at his disposal, Holcomb should have the tools he needs to build something special during his stint with the team.
