Despite his on-court excellence, LeBron James continues to make waves away from the NBA arenas and within his community. Too often, we measure the greatness of particular superstars with the numbers they put up, the titles they end up with or whether they make the game-winning shot or not. In truth, these are merely minor events that the game of basketball presents for athletes who are willing to make a bigger difference. It may be hard for some to comprehend, but sometimes it's bigger than basketball, and the greatness of athletes goes well beyond what they achieve on the NBA hardwood.

A prime example of that has been the Los Angeles Lakers star. The Ohio native came from nothing and continues to make a difference not only in his direct community but in areas across the nation. It’s hard to believe that the man may be greater than the player because of how truly great James is on the floor, but each passing day is proving that the kid from Akron is an icon in making a positive difference.

Recently, James opened up a school in his hometown, which he labeled as maybe the greatest achievement of his life. His “I Promise School” provides free tuition, free uniforms, free bicycle and helmet, free transportation within two miles, free breakfast, lunch and snacks, a food pantry for families, GEDs and job placements services for parents, and guaranteed tuition to the University of Akron for every student who graduates from the school. What James has provided is nothing short of remarkable, and something that means a great deal to the four-time MVP.

As you could imagine, the congratulations, respect, and admiration for James and what he has done with this new school were poured out throughout the nation. NBA personalities, players, fans, and media all took time out of their day to salute the King. He even got the attention of legendary big man Bill Russell, who said he’s “proud” of James and everything he’s doing.

When you’re receiving praise from someone like Russell, you know you’re doing something right. Russell was one of the pioneers for all African-American athletes during his playing days and paved the way for players like James to see his example and build on it.

There is no doubt James will continue to thrive both on the floor and off it. He continues to set the blueprint for athletes who can use their platform to make a difference.
