Kara Lawson joined the growing list of female assistant coaches in the NBA after agreeing to a deal with the Boston Celtics. But before signing with the Celtics, Lawson revealed that she had talks with other teams.

According to Jay King of The Athletic, Lawson admitted that other teams expressed interests in hiring her before, but no deal was agreed upon. Celtics head coach Brad Stevens then reached out to her through a text message, which started the process of negotiating a contract with the Celtics.

Lawson, a former WNBA star, believes that she made the right decision in picking the Celtics because of the proud history of the franchise. She feels that the Celtics is good fit for her because she wants to be a part of an organization who values winning and has a championship tradition that coaches would love to be a part of.

“I wanted to go somewhere where I’d be challenged, I wanted to go somewhere where I’d be allowed to coach, and I wanted to go to an organization that was going to be playing in big games to be able to get a sense of that last frontier of coaching, which is being able to do it in pressure situations,” Lawson said via Shirley Leung of The Boston Globe.

The 38-year-old Lawson is excited to work with budding superstars Jayson Tatum and Jalen Brown. She has also started working with their draft picks in preparation for the 2019 NBA Las Vegas Summer League later this month.
