The struggling Boston Celtics are deemed to be major players in the NBA Trade Deadline this Thursday, and Tristan Thompson is expected to be one of the team's key moving pieces. According to several sources privy to the Celtics' front office's decisions, the team still views the 30-year-old center as a vital cog for the present and the future.
“League sources have indicated that the Celtics remain quite high on the veteran center. He was not signed as a stopgap or a future trade piece during the offseason; they truly targeted him as a priority,” according to The Boston Globe’s Gary Washburn.
The Celtics signed Thompson to a two-year, $19 million deal in the offseason in a bid to strengthen their problematic frontcourt. While the one-time NBA champion has shown glimpses of his old self during his brief tenure with the Celtics so far, he hasn't exactly been the steady anchor they thought he'll be.
The Canadian will miss his fifth straight game on Monday due to the league's health and safety protocols. In 36 games in Celtics green, Thompson has been averaging 7.9 points and 8.4 rebounds on 53.4 percent shooting from the field.
Boston, meanwhile, is sitting .500 right now with a 21-21. They are in danger of getting left behind by the much-improved teams in the East and are barely hanging on to the sixth place in the standings.
Thompson's contract is indeed one of the most enticing trade assets for the Celtics right now, apart from that huge Trade Exemption, of course. However, it looks like TT will stay put in Beantown, until the end of the season, at the very least.
