The Kansas City Chiefs will be without their top rusher on Sunday. They tweeted that Clyde Edwards-Helaire has officially been ruled out for the Week 17 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Edwards-Helaire suffered a shoulder injury in the Chiefs' Week 16 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. He left the contest in the third quarter and did not return.

The fact that the star running back is unavailable for Week 17 is kind of surprising news for Chiefs fans. The most recent update on Edwards-Helaire's injury was pretty optimistic. On Monday, the X-rays on his collarbone came back negative and showed no signs of structural damage. He was listed as day-to-day with a shoulder bruise.

Regardless, the Chiefs are traveling to Cincinnati without their top running back. The majority of the run game workload will most likely fall on Darrel Williams, per NBC Sports Edge.

In the announcement Saturday afternoon, the Chiefs also noted that they added running back Jerick McKinnon to their roster from the injured reserve. He has no designation for the game on Sunday, and should be listed on the Week 17 injury report with a hamstring injury.

There is a possibility that McKinnon takes some of the reps that would've gone to Edwards-Helaire on Sunday. He hasn't taken the game day field since the Chiefs' Week 10 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. Best case scenario, Edwards-Helaire is available by Week 18 against the Denver Broncos, and healthy enough to compete in the playoffs.
