Derrick Johnson decided to call it quits this offseason after playing 14 seasons in the NFL. Johnson signed with the Chiefs to retire with the franchise which he played 13 of his 14 seasons with.

Recently, Johnson went on the 3-point podcast that is hosted by Mike Devito, saying that he wishes he had a quarterback like Patrick Mahomes when he played in Kansas City. The former Chiefs linebacker had this to say about the matter.

“You take the kid Pat Mahomes, second year and he’s doing all this stuff. I’m like, I’ve been at the Chiefs for 13 years, and I’ve never sniffed out a quarterback even close to what Pat Mahomes is doing this early in his career. It just tells you timing is everything,” Johnson said on the 3-Point Stance podcast hosted by former Chiefs defensive end Mike DeVito, Aaron Jackson and Sterling Pingree, via the Kansas City Star.

Over Johnson's career in Kansas City, he made the playoffs five times and made it into the AFC Divisional Round three times. Johnson believes things would've been different if Mahomes was under center in those games.

The Chiefs defense was a lot better when Johnson was on the team in previous seasons. Last season, the Chiefs had one of the worst defenses in the NFL when they lost to the New England Patriots in overtime in the AFC Championship game.

It's tough to play the hypothetical game where we say, “if this had happened” because we'll never know what could've been. Especially when playing the hypothetical game is alluding that Tom Brady would've won less. As Johnson said himself, timing is everything, and Johnson narrowly missed his time to play alongside Mahomes.
