The Kansas Chiefs are off to a strong start in 2018 after winning their first two games, despite a notable absence from star safety Eric Berry as he recovers from a heel injury.

According to Ian Rapoport of The NFL Network, Berry continues to take steps forward in his recovery that may lead to him finally taking the practice field for the first time in over a month.

The Chiefs have been maneuvering quite carefully with Berry over the last few weeks to ensure that he doesn't suffer any setbacks that prevent him from making his return to the field. He is dealing with an injury that could lead to him suffering additional ailments that could put him out of action for quite some time. What should also be noted is that he is still working his way back from a torn Achilles tendon that he suffered in last year's season opener against the New England Patriots.

All of this has pushed Kansas City to go with a precautionary route regarding Berry, as he plays a critical part in their secondary as the anchoring piece to the puzzle. When healthy, he has proven to be one of the top safeties in the league, earning five Pro Bowl nods, three First-Team All-Pro selections, and an NFL Comeback Player of the Year award.

In the meantime, Kansas City's success on the field has lowered the pressure on the franchise to bring Berry back into the mix too quickly, despite the defense's struggles as an unit. Until the 29-year-old is 100 percent, expect the Chiefs to continue operating in this manner.
