The Kansas City Chiefs are preparing for their season opener on Sunday against the Cleveland Browns after Patrick Mahomes and company lost to Tom Brady in the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, the Chiefs were hit with unfortunate news when Tyrann Mathieu landed on the COVID list, putting his status for the opener up in the air, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

That could be a devastating loss, especially against a tough Browns team. In fact, the last game the Browns played was against the Chiefs in the playoffs and they have arguably gotten better in the offseason, so it will be no easy task.

With Mathieu's status still in flux, the Chiefs are preparing two separate game plans, per James Palmer of NFL Network.

“DC Steve Spagnuolo has essentially two game plans, plan A and plan B depending on the availability of Tyrann Mathieu. Mathieu has been attending meetings virtually throughout the week. Andy Reid has hinted that Mathieu could play Sunday without practicing.”

Mathieu is one of their best defenders and still a top-tier safety in the NFL and the Browns have a dangerous offense that includes Nick Chubb, Kareem Hunt, Jarvis Landry, and Odell Beckham Jr.

The Chiefs should get some clarity regarding Mathieu's status as Saturday is the deadline for him to be activated, but for now, nobody knows if he will suit up for Week 1 on Sunday.
