The Colorado Buffaloes are now involved in a lawsuit, as a woman who alleged former Colorado assistant football coach Joe Tumpkin physically and verbally abused her for nearly two years sued Tumpkin and four of his superiors at the school on Wednesday.

The lawsuit was filed in United States District Court in Colorado, and all of the claims involved in the suit will be seeking compensation “based on the determination of a jury trial,” ESPN reported.

Colorado spokesman Ken McConnellogue said in a statement to ESPN:

“The claims in the lawsuit are not well founded factually or legally and we will defend our employees aggressively.”

From ESPN's report:

“Colorado president Bruce Benson, football coach Mike MacIntyre, athletic director Rick George and chancellor Phil DiStefano all face claims of negligence and civil conspiracy, while Tumpkin is being sued for claims of assault, battery, false imprisonment and intentional infliction of emotional distress.”

As it is with all lawsuits, people should be careful before rushing to judgement. That goes for both victim-shaming or declaring others guilty. The court of public opinion often carries to much weight as is. It is often best to find out what the judicial system does first.

Also, without all the facts and details, a nation should refrain from judgement for the time being.

MacIntyre and George later received reprimands from the school for their handling of the matter. They also made donations to organizations that address domestic violence issues.

Tumpkin resigned Jan. 27. This isn't the only legal matter he is facing, as there is also a pending domestic abuse case against the former Colorado coach.

“This is no longer about protecting the man who abused me and the powerful men who decided not to do what they were morally, contractually, and legally required to do,” said the alleged victim, Pamela Fine, in a statement from attorney Peter Ginsberg. “I am no longer protecting the men who silence victims in the name of winning football games.”
