Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard announced Wednesday veteran wide receiver T.Y. Hilton is going on injured reserve to start the 2021 NFL season after neck surgery, according to ESPN's Mike Wells.

It was known Hilton was going to miss the start of the season due to this neck issue. Hilton will miss at least the first three games of the season because of the move to injured reserve, but the hope is he'll be back after that.

Hilton returned to the Colts on a one-year deal in the offseason. The 31-year-old is entering his 10th season in the NFL. He has played his entire career with Indy after being picked in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

The wideout soon blossomed into one of the best players in the NFL at his position. Hilton made four consecutive Pro Bowls from 2014-17, with his best season coming in 2016. That year, he caught 91 passes and led the league with 1,448 yards receiving. He also caught six touchdown passes.

Hilton caught 56 passes for 762 yards and five touchdowns with Philip Rivers under center for the Colts in 2020. While he's not the player he once was, he's still a solid veteran presence out wide, so hopefully he won't miss longer than those first three weeks.

Indy has had itself a rough preseason in terms of injuries. In addition to Hilton, Carson Wentz and Quenton Nelson missed valuable time due to similar foot surgeries. Wentz was also just placed the COVID-19 list. There have been other health issues has well.
