The Detroit Pistons last won an NBA championship back in 2004 when they upset the title favorites that year, the Los Angeles Lakers.
Led by a starting lineup that featured, Chauncey Billups, Richard Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince, Rasheed Wallace and Ben Wallace, they blew out the Lakers in three of their four wins en route to their first championship in 14 years.
Their triumph capped off what was considered one of the most successful years in franchise history and fans did their best to keep memorabilia from the championship. Just last week, they were given a chance to own one of the most sought-after pieces of jewelry from 2004 as someone put a Pistons championship ring up on eBay.
It was described as “issued to a nonplayer/coaching staff member associated with the Detroit Pistons.” So clearly it wasn't from one of the key players of the team that year, but still a nice piece to have especially for Pistons fanatics.
The starting price for the 10-karat gold ring was 99 cents and it had a total of 15 bids and went to the winner with a total bid of $3,550.
The 2004 Pistons team were a huge underdog coming into the NBA Finals as the Lakers had four shoo-in Hall of Famers in their lineup, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O'Neal, Karl Malone and Gary Payton. After they lost Game 1, their chances of winning it all were slim-to-none but they overcame all of the odds and won the next four games.
Given this history, it only shows the value of the ring that was auctioned online and why there was a buyer who got it at a steep price.
