Major League Baseball has handed out an 80-game suspension without pay to veteran starting pitcher Carlos Martinez after he tested positive for Ibutamoren, a performance-enhancing substance that is listed on the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program's banned list, as noted by The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.

Martinez is just coming off of a stint with the Worcester Red Sox, the Triple-A team for the Boston Red Sox. He put pen to paper on a minor league contract deal with the Red Sox organization earlier this month and proceeded to feature in two games for Worcester. He posted a 20.77 ERA in 4.1 innings pitched and was subsequently released by the Red Sox last week.

Martinez’s short tenure with the Red Sox came after he signed with the San Francisco Giants in March, but he was later released after he did not appear in a single game in the majors or minors for the organization.

Martinez most notably featured with the St. Louis Cardinals for 11 seasons, where he was called up as a reliever before emerging as a workhorse starting pitcher. He made two All-Star appearances and logged 967.0 total innings pitched before the Cardinals decided to decline his $17 million club option for the 2022 season.

It remains to be seen whether Martinez, who is currently a free agent, plans to appeal this hefty suspension given out by Major League Baseball.
