Naomi Osaka made her long-awaited return to the French Open on Sunday, but it didn't exactly go to plan. The former top-ranked player lost in straight sets in the first round to American Amanda Anisimova, 7-5, 6-4 at Roland Garros.

While Osaka now has Wimbledon to look forward to, she is still iffy about playing in the Major because of the ATP's new rule to strip points in response to banning Russian and Belarusian players.

“I’m someone who gets motivated by the idea of rising in the rankings. The intention of this measure was good, but the execution is all over the place.”

Wimbledon isn't allowing any Russian or Belarusian players at the All-England club, which has certainly sparked controversy.

Osaka struggled at the French Open, but she was also clearly playing through pain. The Japanese international had tape on her left Achilles and looked bothered by some soreness. Osaka double-faulted twice on her break point and just looked really sloppy in this match.

Anisimova is the same player who beat Osaka earlier this year in the Australian Open third round and also made the French Open semifinals in 2019. Naomi Osaka sits at 38th in the world and with her status now unclear for Wimbledon, there's a good chance we won't see her play in a Major until the US Open. She also skipped out on Wimbledon last year due to mental health issues.
