Not much is known about newly-minted New York Giants head coach Joe Judge, but those who are familiar with him speak highly of his capabilities.

On Wednesday, New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick spoke glowingly of his now-former assistant, and in addition to Belichick, University of Alabama head coach Nick Saban heaped praise upon Judge, who served three years under Saban as a special teams assistant from 2009 through 2011.

“Joe is one of the brightest young coaches in our profession, and I think he will do a tremendous job as head coach of the New York Giants,” said Saban, per the Giants. “They are getting an extremely smart football coach who is very loyal, organized and diligent about getting the job done.”

New York has been widely criticized for its hiring of Judge, as the 38-year-old is a largely unknown commodity.

He landed his first gig on the collegiate level back in 2005, serving as a graduate assistant for Mississippi State, a post he held for three years.

Judge then landed a job as linebackers coach of Binghamton-South in 2008 before joining Alabama the following year.

The Patriots hired him as a special teams assistant in 2012, where Judge worked for three seasons before being elevated to special teams coordinator in 2015.

Judge was then also given the task of wide receivers coach in addition to his special teams responsibilities this past season.

The Giants went just 4-12 in 2019, resulting in the firing of Pat Shurmur after two unsuccessful years at the helm. New York has made the playoffs just once since last winning the Super Bowl during the 2011-12 campaign.
