Could Daniel Jones actually start Week 1 under center for the New York Giants?

Giants head coach Pat Shurmur does not seem completely opposed to the possibility.

After yet another strong preseason performance on Thursday night in which Jones completed nine of his 11 passes for 141 yards, Shurmur played it coy when asked Jones could be given a shot earlier than most are expecting:

“I’ve said it all along. Daniel, when it’s his time to play is gonna be ready, and we’re gonna continue to get him ready,” Shurmur said, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. “We got a couple of weeks left before we play Dallas.”

Of course, this could be lip service from Shurmur, as both he and the Giants front office have maintained all offseason long that Eli Manning will be the opening day starter.

Or, as Florio points out, this could be Shurmur's way of lighting a fire under Manning to bring out the very best in him in order to keep his job.

Either way, Jones has certainly looked terrific thus far, going 25-for-30 with a couple of touchdowns and no interceptions over his first three exhibition games.

Jones, who played his collegiate football at Duke, was selected by the Giants with the sixth overall pick of the NFL Draft back in April, a decision that had just about everyone around the country scratching their heads.

But, thus far, Jones has certainly played the part of a No. 6 overall pick, and it's looking more and more like we might get to see him start a regular-season game sooner rather than later.
