New York Giants running back Jonathan Stewart will not be activated from injury reserve after the deadline passed to bring him back to the active roster.

Stewart was signed by the Giants in the offseason, but he landed on IR earlier in the season due to a foot injury and played just three games this season. He had only six carries for 17 yards in New York's first three games before suffering the injury.

With Stewart now out for the remainder of the season, it seems likely that his tenure with the Giants will be a short one.

Stewart joined the franchise after becoming the all-time leading rusher for the Carolina Panthers, as the veteran running back compiled 7,318 yards during his 10 seasons with the franchise.

Of course, Stewart's return likely wouldn't have changed much about the Giants' season. Pat Shurmur's team is 4-8 on the year, and there hasn't been a ton of positives aside from the impressive talents of rookie running back Saquon Barkley.

The Giants started the season 1-7 overall, and that put their backs against the wall before the calendar even hit November.

But New York has won three of its last four games, and perhaps that will allow Barkley and company to build some momentum in the final four games of the regular season.

The Giants will head to Washington for a NFC East showdown with the Redskins this weekend before finishing up with games against the Tennessee Titans, Indianapolis Colts, and Dallas Cowboys.

Shurmur's team suffered a 20-13 defeat in the previous meeting with the Redskins back in Week 8.
