The Chicago Bears have had an up and down season in their second year under Matt Nagy. Despite the inconsistencies, David Montgomery has been a bright spot in the offense this season.

The Bears selected Montgomery in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Coming out of Iowa State, Montgomery was considered to be one of the best running backs in the draft class.

Chicago decided to take Montgomery after trading Jordan Howard to the Philadelphia Eagles. The rookie running back was expected to come in and become the featured back in the backfield.

However, due to struggles in the offense, Montgomery has seen an inconsistent role for the Bears. In light of that, what letter grade does Montgomery deserve for his first 13 games in the NFL?

Montgomery's grade for the first 13 games: B+

Through the first 13 games of his career, Montgomery has rushed for 680 yards on 192 carries and five touchdowns. The Iowa State product has also hauled in 23 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown as a receiving threat.

As of this moment, Montgomery is second among rookie running backs in rushing yards. The only rookie rusher who is ahead of the Bears' rookie running back is Josh Jacobs of the Oakland Raiders.

While Montgomery has been impressive, he hasn't seen nearly enough opportunities in the offense. That falls on Nagy, who has been learning that Montgomery can be a focal point in the offense in recent weeks.

Over the course of the season, the first-year running back has three games where he has been given fewer than 10 touches. In those games, the Bears went 0-3 and were outscored 70-49 in those contests.

At the same time, the Bears are better when Montgomery is heavily utilized out of the backfield. When Montgomery has gotten 15 or more touches, Chicago has won seven of their 10 games.

One of the most impressive aspects of Montgomery's game is his ability to make defenders miss. Even with a limited role for part of the year, Montgomery has 20 broken tackles (tied for ninth-most in the NFL).

There's no doubt that Montgomery has flashed plenty of potential in his rookie campaign. But there's still room for improvement for the Bears' young rusher moving forward.

The areas that Montgomery could see growth in involve his pass protection and as a pass-catcher. When playing the running back position, arguably the most important skill is being able to block in the passing game.

Also, Montgomery will have to hone his receiving skills if he hopes to become an every-down back for the Bears. Currently, it appears that Chicago could've gotten a steal with Montgomery with the 73rd overall pick.
