Atlanta Hawks head coach Lloyd Pierce has a new role for big man John Collins. Given his speed and athleticism, Pierce is eyeing Collins to be a facilitator both in the half-court and fastbreak setting.

Pierce believes that the defense will likely catch up and deny Collins' pick-and-roll game. As such, Collins would have to adjust by looking at openings once the double team arrives.

“We definitely want to see him become more of a facilitator as well,” second-year coach Lloyd Pierce said. “I think teams are going to scheme for him in every game. They’re going to try and take away his pick-and-roll game. They’ll be more alert to the picking and popping and shooting 3’s, so the next progression is once he catches it and he doesn’t have a shot and he’s not rolling to the basket, to make plays for other guys.”

In transition, Pierce pointed out how Collins can utilize his rebounding ability, athleticism, and speed to be the team's facilitator. Once he gets the rebound, Collins need not find a point guard to run the break. He can run it himself which will place the defense up against a wall.

“Using his speed and ability to rebound to start our breaks,” Pierce said. “Instead of making him a positionless player, we’ve got to put the ball in his hands and see what he looks like doing some of those things. He’s an unbelievable defensive rebounder, he’s got great athleticism and speed. If we can get him with the rebound and then a head start, and our wings are out, already we’ve got a four-on-three opportunity. That’ll be the first start for him is just learning how to do that.”

This is an exciting predicament for Collins and the Hawks. Last season, he established himself as a reliable big man and pick-and-roll partner with Trae Young. This year, we may see a Collins retaining that role while showcasing his point-forward abilities.
