PJ Tucker decided to opt out of his contract with the Miami Heat, but that doesn't mean he's leaving the South Beach franchise.

By declining his $7.4 million option for the 2022-23 season, Tucker enters free agency and can negotiate a new deal–whether he's seeking a pay raise, a longer deal for more assurance or both. While several championship contenders are reportedly interested in his services, the Heat will also remain in the race to sign him.

As NBA insider Tim Reynolds noted, the Heat are expected to fight to keep him since Tucker himself has said before that he would like to return to Miami.

PJ Tucker was a key cog for the Heat as they finish at the top of the East in the 2021-22 season. The veteran forward was brought in for his defense, but he also stepped up his game on offense and averaged 7.6 points on 48.4 percent shooting–which are his best numbers in six years.

The 37-year-old also started 70 of the 71 games he played for the Heat, which is clear proof how much Erik Spoelstra trusts him.

Tucker is a veteran player any team would want, so the Heat will surely be facing some strong competition to keep him in Vice City. The good thing is that Tucker did seem happy with the franchise and looks more than willing to stay with the right price.
