Sam Darnold's first two seasons with the New York Jets have been interesting, to say the least.

Darnold, who played his collegiate football at the University of Southern California, was originally selected by the Jets with the third overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft.

He made 13 starts during his rookie campaign, throwing for 2,865 yards, 17 touchdowns and 15 interceptions while completing 57.7 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 77.6.

Then, in 2019, Darnold missed three games due to mono. Once he was on the field, he totaled 3,024 yards, 19 touchdowns and 13 picks, completing 61.9 percent of his throws and registering a passer rating of 84.3.

While Darnold has shown flashes, he has yet to develop the consistency you would expect from a No. 3 overall pick, and now, the young quarterback is entering his pivotal third season.

So, what does Jets head coach Adam Gase want Darnold to do heading into 2020? In speaking with Neil Best of Newsday and other media members on a conference call, Gase says it's simple:

“Grab ahold of this offense.”

In Darnold's defense, he hasn't had a ton of offensive talent to work with over his first couple of seasons, and the offensive line has not exactly been stout.

But it certainly seems like it's time for the 22-year-old to begin flourishing, especially if he wants to be the quarterback of the future in New York. Gase added,

“I know we had discussions before he left at the end of the year of some things that we wanted to work on … But really, it’s grab ahold of this offense and really learn from studying the film, which he’s gone through a lot on his own.”

The Jets went 7-9 in 2019.
