The exit of Yellowstone star Kevin Costner was highly-discussed. However, Costner wants to set the record straight.

“I loved the show,” Costner told People.

He continued by saying he likes and loves the cast, the plot, and the Yellowstone world. Previously, there were reports that Costner was leaving after the fifth season. There were also rumors of drama between Costner and the series creator Taylor Sheridan.

For Costner, “the scripts weren't there.” This is what seemingly caused the Season 5 delays. He also dismissed reports that he left Yellowstone to make Horizon: An American Saga.

“When it was first pitched to me by Taylor, it was one season and [like] a long movie, which [is] speaking my language… but ultimately, I think what happened was the studio didn't want that,” Sheridan said. “And because he's such a prolific writer, he said, ‘I can do that. I can make a series that goes on.”

Allegedly, Costner agreed to do three seasons and “ended up doing it for five.” He even claims that he was open to continuing on but there are no scripts ready.

“There was a moment where that show for me stopped for 14 months… That's the fact,” Costner explained. “I could have done a lot of things in that time, but I wasn't aware that that [hold-up] was going to happen.”

“Disappointed” in the rumors

In turn, rumors swirled about Kevin Costner's Yellowstone exit. It hurt that no one defended him during that period.

“I read all the stories,” he said. “I was disappointed that nobody on their side… ever stepped up to defend what it was I actually did for them. There came a moment where I thought, ‘Wow, when is somebody going to say something about what I have done versus what I haven't done?'”

There is a scenario in which Costner returns, but it doesn't seem likely.

“I've always felt that…It might be an interesting moment to come back and finish the mythology of this modern-day family,” he claimed. “And if that happens, I would step into it if I agreed with how it was being done.

“In the very end, I could do any more for it than I had already done,” he concluded.
