Golden State Warriors small forward Kevin Durant's childhood friend, NFL linebacker NaVorro Bowman, says KD “needs” the New York Knicks to surpass Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James’ popularity.

Durant becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer once he declines his 2019-20 player option with the Warriors. The two-time Finals MVP has been heavily linked to signing with the Knicks, who have cap space to sign two max contract players this summer.

Bowman told Marc Berman of the New York Post Durant “has an idea’’ where he wants to go this summer.

Durant’s childhood friend, NaVorro Bowman, is featured in the book and told The Post recently that Durant “has an idea’’ where he wants to go and said KD “needs’’ the Knicks to surpass LeBron James’ popularity.

The Knicks have been a walking disaster for years. If Durant signs with them and gets them back to prominence, his popularity in New York and around the league would soar astronomically.

Some fans still haven't forgiven Durant for joining the Warriors in the summer of 2016 after Golden State won an NBA record 73 games during the 2015-16 season.

If KD takes the Knicks even to the Eastern Conference Finals, he could surpass LeBron as the most mainstream NBA player in the world.
