Newly signed New York Knicks veteran power forward Taj Gibson returned to his native borough of Brooklyn on Saturday, where he received the key to the borough.

When asked about expectations for the upcoming 2019-20 season with the Knicks, though, Gibson answered the “sky is the limit.”

Per Stefan Bondy in the New York Daily News:

Gibson wouldn’t set a goal of playoffs — “I don’t want to put a foot in my mouth,” he said — but labeled the underdog status as a benefit. Vegas oddsmakers believe the Knicks will miss the postseason and lose at least 50 games for the sixth straight season. “Right now it’s early but sky is the limit,” Gibson said. “I see a bunch a guys who’ve been ridiculed a lot since the start of free agency but it’s good, it gives you a lot of things to work for, to work hard for, because nobody wants something given to them on a free plate.”

The 34-year-old big man, who last played for the Minnesota Timberwolves over the past two seasons, is set to shore up a Knicks frontcourt featuring second-year center Mitchell Robinson and recent signees in 24-year-old Julius Randle, Bobby Portis, and Marcus Morris. Gibson has made eight trips to the playoffs during his 10-year career, including six straight appearances with Tom Thibodeau, a former Knicks assistant coach under Jeff Van Gundy, and the Chicago Bulls.

New York inked Gibson to a two-year deal worth $20 million earlier in the summer, with the second year being a partial guarantee for the wily vet.
