A lot has happened between the New York Knicks and Kristaps Porzingis' camp before both sides decided to part ways earlier this year. What was once seen as the beginning of a fairy tale story during the 2015-16 season is now a chapter that everyone involved wants to forget.

In February 2018, Porzingis suffered an ACL injury, and up to this point, he hasn't played an official NBA game. There were rumors circulating at the middle of last season that he was already cleared to play, but according to Marc Berman of the NY Post, KP's agent, which also happens to be his brother, prevented him from playing so he could remain eligible for a max contract.

As last season wore on, the Knicks became convinced Janis would not let his brother, who was rehabbing from a torn ACL suffered in February 2018, take the court even if he passed all his knee-strength tests. There was a sense Janis was unwilling to risk his brother’s future $158 million payday.

The rift between the Knicks and KP's camp was so irreparable that the former just decided to trade him to the Dallas Mavericks, who then decided to sign him to a five-year at the end of June.

According to rumors, Porzingis was already 100 percent ready by March, but the Mavs decided to sit him for the rest of the season as they were not really competing for anything. Had KP's camp decided to let him play and then he suffered another injury or if he's not the same way as he once was two seasons ago, the Mavs would've refused to offer him the same deal that they gave him back in June.

It was a wise move by KP and his brother. Hopefully he lives up to the expectations from the Mavs and its fans.
