The New York Knicks currently possess the eighth overall selection in the 2020 NBA Draft.

With that pick, it appears their hope is to land point guard prospect LaMelo Ball. However, there is a pretty strong chance that the youngest Ball brother does not fall down that far in the draft.

Therefore, the Knicks need a backup plan. It appears they have an idea for that as well.

According to Marc Berman of the New York Post, New York is eyeing another point guard prospect, Killian Hayes.

“It doesn’t mean the Knicks will pick him if he falls to No. 8 in the NBA Draft, but Killian Hayes currently has a narrow edge as the team’s second point guard on the board after LaMelo Ball, according to NBA sources.”

Like Ball, Hayes did not participate in NCAA basketball this past year—both point guards played overseas.

Hayes spent the 2019-20 season with ratiopharm Ulm in Germany's professional league, also playing a few games of the Eurocup. While there, he averaged 12.8 points and 6.2 assists per game. He shot 45.5 percent from the field, 39 percent from 3 and 90.9 percent from the free throw line. Meanwhile, Hayes averaged 1.5 steals per game on the defensive side of the ball.

Listed at 6'4″ and 216 pounds, Hayes brings nice size to the position. He has proven that he can shoot very well and has great court vision. There is a lot of potential there and he could develop a strong post game for a point guard and become an elite defender.

Due to all of that, many people think very highly of Hayes. So there is no guarantee that he is even there when the Knicks have a pick in the eighth slot.

That being said, if he is there—it looks like Hayes might be the route that New York wants to go.

Nothing is set in stone. But as of now it appears the Knicks have a pecking order in place, Ball and Hayes are the first two on their list. We'll have to wait and see if anything changes before the draft arrives.
