It sounds like the Los Angeles Lakers will be getting point guard Rajon Rondo back earlier than expected.

On Monday, Lakers head coach Frank Vogel revealed that Rondo, who fractured his thumb soon after arriving in Orlando on July 12, could possibly be active when the Lakers begin their playoff push in Game 1 against the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday.

Rondo was spotted practicing with the Lakers on Monday after clearing quarantine.

Frank Vogel said Rajon Rondo is medically cleared to play, but he deemed it “unlikely” that the four-time All-Star plays in Game 1. Considering Rondo was initially expected to miss six to eight weeks, a return at any point in round one would be ahead of schedule.

Rondo left the bubble to get surgery and returned last week, but he had to go in isolation as part of the NBA protocol in the Disney bubble.

The top-seeded Lakers (52-19) won just three of their eight seeding games. Their collective effort was inconsistent, and the team suffered from a lack of guard depth without Rondo and Avery Bradley, who opted out of the restart.

The Lakers could certainly use Rondo's defense, playoff experience and veteran savvy against Portland's explosive backcourt of Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum.

L.A. swept the season series against Portland, and Anthony Davis credited Rondo's importance to that specific match-up.

“Rondo was huge for us,” Davis said Sunday about the Lakers' 4-0 record against Portland in 2019-20. “Able to break down their offense and their defensive schemes and kind of even the odds on the floor during that series. So he was a big part of it.”

On Sunday, Vogel told reporters that he doesn't know exactly when Rondo is “going to be available to be in uniform.” However, he did emphasize the Lakers would “get him on the court and see where he's at. But no specific timetable yet on him.”

In 48 games this season, the 34-year old Rondo has averaged 7.1 points, 3.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game.
