Report: Lakers never reached out to Dave Griffin, Bob Myers or Jerry West after Magic Johnson resigned
After Magic Johnson retired from his post, the Los Angeles Lakers reportedly never reached out to David Griffin, Bob Myers or Jerry West, according to Sam Amick and Bill Oram of The Athletic.
Griffin was the Cleveland Cavaliers’ general manager and has a good rapport with Lakers star LeBron James. Griffin got hired by the New Orleans Pelicans last week.
Myers is the general manager of the Golden State Warriors, while West is a consultant with the Los Angeles Clippers.
According to sources, the Lakers never reached out to LeBron’s former general manager in Cleveland, David Griffin, before he agreed to join New Orleans. Sources also say that they haven’t reached out to the Warriors regarding general manager Bob Myers. Ditto for Jerry West, the Clippers consultant who told The Athletic recently that he wasn’t sure what his future held past this summer but now appears likely to remain in his current role going forward (ideas had circulated about West possibly heading for the Lakers alongside a younger, high-level GM).
The Lakers probably should have reached out to Griffin. He’s a smart basketball mind who could have helped turn the organization around.
Myers and West, meanwhile, have been open that they are comfortable with their respective teams. Rob Pelinka will remain as the GM of the Lakers, who are currently looking for a new head coach.
