The Los Angeles Lakers are embarking on an expansive search for their next head coach. At his exit interview press conference, Rob Pelinka said the Lakers are searching for a “strong voice” who can motivate and inspire accomplished veterans. As usual with the Lakers, the organization will initially target splashy, high-profile names.
So far, the candidates that have surfaced in rumors and reports have represented decidedly inside-the-box thinking: Doc Rivers, Quin Snyder, Scott Brooks, Mike Brown, Nick Nurse, Kurt Rambis (gulp), to name a few. However, should Los Angeles feel like going in a completely original direction, hip-hop icon and ex-hooper Master P has just the person to replace the departer Frank Vogel.
Master P.
“At least give it a shot because this is Hollywood. When you look at the Lakers, I know what Mr. Buss done, he thought outside the box. So, if Jeanie Buss wants to think outside the box, I'll bring some hell of assistant coaches with me like Shaq, John Lucas. I don't know if Shaq wants to do that, but if he do, we can take over.”
Master P may not have experience on the NBA sideline, but he does have basketball and leadership credentials. After founding the No Limit Records label, Master P has led a hugely successful career as an executive and entrepreneur. He also enjoyed a brief stint as a backup guard for the Fort Wayne Fury of the CBA in 1998 and was a training camp invite for the Charlotte Hornets and Toronto Raptors in the ensuing years. He even coached former-future-Lakers star DeMar DeRozan in AAU.
In June 2021, the Louisiana native similarly campaigned for the New Orleans Pelicans gig. In fact, he told TMZ in 2017 that he was close to joining Alvin Gentry's staff, and believes Gentry would not have been let go had he brought P on board.
No word yet on if LeBron James would welcome the hire.
Do it, Jeanie!
