LeBron James participated in the unveiling of a colorful new basketball court at the school founded by he and his foundation founded in his hometown of Akron, OH on Wednesday. The Los Angeles Lakers superstar not only was in attendance for the official christening of the multi-colored court, which reads “WE ARE FAMILY” in a bright, bold palette, but also christened it in a different way altogether by providing one of the baskets with its first ever dunk in a casual scrimmage with young students.

It’s been just less than a full year since James, in partnership with the LeBron James Family Foundation, opened the “I Promise School” in Akron, a public elementary school serving at-risk youth. The school's goal is helping less fortunate students and their families get on track toward sustained success, not just in the classroom but also at home. Students for IPS are selected based on test scores and other criterion, then placed in a lottery. The school currently serves third and fourth graders, with plans to expand to grades one through eight by 2022.

James was in the midst another stellar season during his debut with the Lakers before he was bitten by the injury bug. The three-time MVP strained his groin in a Christmas day victory over the Golden State Warriors, missing the next 17 games as Los Angeles fell from fourth in the Western Conference to out of playoff positioning altogether. He returned in late January at less than 100 percent, proving unable to lift the Lakers back into the West's top-eight before being shut down in late March.
