When Matt Patricia took the Detroit Lions job, he knew that he had a lot of talent on his roster, but he also knew there were some big holes that needed to be filled if the Lions to take that next step forward.

For Patricia, the biggest challenge is looking at the whole draft board. When he was with the New England Patriots as a defensive coordinator, he knew that he only had to focus on that side of the ball, but now as a head coach he needs to focus on the whole team.

“I actually have to be careful that I don’t go too far into that and remember that you have to keep the whole team in mind because it’s easy to dive into specifically those two positions and say, ‘Hey, you know I’ve seen that guy before in this,'” Patricia told the Detroit News. “You know, when you were singularly focused in a specific position group and say, ‘Hey, we can really do something with that.’ But if you’re kind of ignoring the big-picture look, you might have a guy that might be a little bit more talented at another position that might be a little bit more of a need.”

That means that Patricia will probably have more of a say on the defensive side, and will rely on his offensive coaches for that side of the ball.

Even with that in mind though he needs to have a good understanding of the players that he will be selected on both sides of the ball.
