The Detroit Lions could be in a great spot to trade back from the third pick, but coach Matt Patricia thinks it's too early to start that chatter. All signs are pointing towards the Cincinnati Bengals selecting Joe Burrow with the first pick, and the Washington Redskins picking Chase Young with the second.

With the Lions holding the third pick, if there is no one they fall in love with there, it could be a highly sought after pick. One possibility could be a team trying to get in front of the Miami Dolphins to select Tua Tagovailoa.

“It’s January,” Patricia said, via Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.

There have been some questions about if the Lions should select a quarterback with their third pick, but Patricia seems happy with Matthew Stafford going forward. Stafford was shut down last year with a back injury, but Patricia doesn't expect it to linger over into this season.

“I mean, honestly, we’ve talked about the injury for Matthew last year, just really was a thing last year where we felt it wasn’t safe for him to play through the rest of the year,” Patricia said. “Moving forward, next year, I anticipate him being fine, ready to go from that standpoint. So nothing really with the injury will affect that at all.”

Even with Patricia sticking by Stafford now, the team would be foolish to not take a look at Tagovailoa who could be a game-changer for their franchise. Selecting him and sitting him behind Stafford for a year or two wouldn't be the worst idea.
