The Louisville Cardinals basketball program is in some sort of turmoil right now but it’s good for them to know that the university has got their back.

The university’s support for its basketball team was very much palpable on Saturday when Cardinals basketball players received a rousing standing ovation at halftime from a predominantly pro-Louisville crowd that watched the Cardinals destroy the Murray State Racers, 55-10.

It has been a long week for Louisville sports after news of corruption in college basketball — that also implicated the program — exploded onto the scene early this week. The FBI-led investigation of bribery in the college ranks has already resulted in the firing of Rick Pitino as basketball coach of Louisville. Following Pitino’s exit, Louisville has promoted David Padgett as the team’s interim coach.

David Padgett led the Cardinals’ basketball team to the field on Saturday and stood in the end zone as the almost 48,000 football spectators rose to their feet to honor the group.

Now rid of Rick Pitino, the Cardinals will be looking to rebrand their image. It’s not an easy thing to do considering that Louisville appeared to have condoned Pitino’s other questionable acts in the past. For Padgett and company, winning will partly take care of a ton of transitional issues – and that’s where their focus is on right now.

As for the former Louisville coach, he has released several statements, through his lawyer, still denying any knowledge of the happenings that were happening within his own program. For those keeping scoring, that would make Pitino 0-2 on knowing massive scandals happening on his own watch. Or, you know, pretending not to know.
