Manny Pacquiao is set to face his most daunting challenge yet. The boxing legend has declared his intention to run for president of the Republic of the Philippines in the nation's coming 2022 elections.

Pacquiao made a strong commitment to the Filipino people as he gave his acceptance speech, staking his campaign on his desire to end corruption in the country.

“I accept your nomination as the candidate for president of the Republic of the Philippines,” said Manny Pacquiao in his native Filipino. “It is now the time for the oppressed to win. It is now the time for our nation to rise from poverty. It is now the time for a clean government where every centavo goes to Filipinos.

Pacquiao has been involved in Philippine politics for over a decade. He was elected as a congressman of the Sarangani province back in 2010 and was re-elected for another term in 2013. Manny Pacquiao currently serves as a senator after successfully running for office in 2016.

He then sent a stern warning to corrupt public officials that he was prepared to come after them if elected.

“To those who continue to serve in government to exploit and steal from the country's coffers, you will find yourselves in jail soon,” Pacquiao warned.

Manny Pacquiao is nearing the end of his boxing career. But his aspirations as a national figure go far beyond the confines of any boxing ring.
