Coming into Friday, the March Madness Final Four on the women's side of things was all set. The last teams remaining were South Carolina, LSU, Virginia Tech and Iowa. In the first game of the day, LSU defeated Virginia Tech to reach the first championship game in school history. Not only that, LSU was down 13 points in the third quarter and rallied back to snatch the victory. Following the game, LSU head coach Kim Mulkey revealed what she said to the team to get them fired up to complete the comeback.

“Defense, unbelievable defense. I told them in that last timeout, you play like this is the last two to three minutes of your life that you'll ever play basketball,” Mulkey said. “Don't wait because you got ten minutes, you got to go now.”

Kim Mulkey returned to her home state of Louisiana in 2021 to take over an LSU program that had not been to the NCAA Tournament since 2017. Prior to that she had been the head coach at Baylor for 21 years. During her time at Baylor she led the program to three national championships. With the win, Mulkey has become only the second coach since C. Vivian Stringer to lead two different programs to the national championship game.

In her first season as head coach at LSU, Mulkey led the team to a 26-6 record and to the second-round of March Madness. This season she led them to a 32-2 record including 15-1 in SEC play. The only team LSU lost to during the regular season was South Carolina.
