Although this year's ā€œMarch Madnessā€ has gone off pretty much without a hitch, the NCAA Tournament encountered quite the scary moment on Tuesday evening. With the top-seeded Gonzaga Bulldogs and sixth-seeded USC Trojans squaring off in Indianapolis, referee Bert Smith collapsed on the court just a few minutes into the Elite Eight clash.

Thankfully, Smith was quickly stretchered off of the floor and clearly regained consciousness before ultimately exiting the court.

According to the latest updates on the situation of the referee, he is ā€œalert and stable.ā€ It has also been revealed that he did not need to be sent to hospital, which is great news considering what just happened in the March Madness showdown.

In addition to Bert Smith collapsing on Tuesday, the only other hiccup that March Madness has encountered this time around is the fact that the VCU Rams were unable to take the floor for the school's Round of 64 matchup against the Oregon Ducks. With Oregon advancing following what was officially deemed to be a no contest between the two sides, VCU was found to have complications stemming from COVID-19 upon arriving in Indianapolis for the ā€œBig Dance.ā€

Gonzaga has remained atop the standings all season long, as the ā€œZagsā€ now appear to be headed to the Final Four alongside both the Baylor Bears and Houston Cougars, each of which punched their respective tickets on Monday. Although USC has remained quite competitive and more than impressive throughout the majority of this year's March Madness, the No. 1 team in the country has just proven to be too much to handle for the Trojans.

The Michigan Wolverines and UCLA Bruins will battle it out later on Tuesday for the right to serve as the fourth and final team to advance.
