Wizards of the Coast announced a breakthrough collaboration in the form of MARVEL MTG Universes Beyond products, “coming soon.”

Wizards of the Coast, a subsidiary of Hasbro and the publisher of Magic the Gathering trading card game, has just announced a collaboration with MARVEL, a property of Disney. While the Universes Beyond product usually meant that the collaboration would involve the third-party IP to be published as new Magic the Gathering cards, Wizards of the Coast fell short in announcing actually what the collaboration is all about.

It is currently unknown whether the MARVEL collaboration will lead to a full-on expansion like Tales of the Middle-Earth: Lord of the Rings, a Commander product like Doctor Who and Warhammer 40,000, or a Secret Lair drop like The Walking Dead, all previous Universes Beyond collab projects that Wizards of the Coast has produced in recent years.

Wizards of the Coast's teaser trailer also didn't show any cards or products, nor did it reveal a release date or window for the product. The Universes Beyond pipeline currently has Jurassic Park SecretLairs for Q4 2023, Fallout Commander products in Q1 2024, Assassin's Creed micro set in H2 2024, and Final Fantasy in 2025. MARVEL's product will likely come after Final Fantasy, although players may expect reveals about the product to come sooner, especially since Wizards has already revealed the collaboration this early.

Magic the Gathering's Universes Beyond product has been a polarizing topic within the Magic community. While many have praised the products as being inclusive and a way for Magic to be introduced to non-players, some critics have claimed that the Universes Beyond product takes away the attention from the Magic IP and dilutes the game's identity. Nevertheless, these products have been commercially successful for Wizards of the Coast, which encourages the company to continue seeking these collaborations with other IPs.

The collaboration also comes in spite of the release of Disney's Lorcana, a new trading card game said to be the newest rival to Wizards' Magic the Gathering.
