It seems like the Dallas Mavericks are not the free agency destination they were years ago. They were able to get quality players like Chandler ParsonsJ.J. Barea and Monta Ellis in the past, but some of the more recent star players the Mavericks pursued are gone, such as Hassan Whiteside, Mike Conley, Nic Batum, and Dwight Howard. Even players they wanted to replace Parsons with at the small forward position are gone, such as Evan Fournier, Evan Turner, and Soloman Hill. But this has happened in the past with many players.

Some of the things that happened were out of the Maverick’s control, such as the loyalty of those players. Whiteside stayed with the Heat, Conley stayed with the Grizzlies, and Batum stayed with the Hornets. Whiteside returned for four years and $98 million, which was more money the Mavericks could offer. Conley returned for a 5 year, $153 million, which is the largest contract in NBA history. Batum was offered a 5th year, which the Mavericks couldn’t even offer.

The Mavericks have seven free agents that they need to decide on, such as Raymond Felton, David Lee, Dirk Nowitzki, Zaza Pachulia, Dwight Powell, Charlie Villanueva, and Deron Williams. Chandler Parsons has already accepted the principal terms of a 4 year $98.4 million contract with the Memphis Grizzlies. It’s unlikely that they’ll keep any of those guys.

What the Mavericks should do is find some younger talent to surround the players that are already on their roster and can help take off the scoring load from Dirk. In the case that Dirk retires, the Mavs need someone that they can pass the franchise too. Some players that are still available to pick up that are quality in this league are Ryan Anderson, Pau Gasol, Courtney Lee, and Harrison Barnes.
