The Dallas Mavericks are looking to make history by coming back from a 3-0 deficit in the NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics, and Luka Doncic said the emphasis within the team is the belief that they can do it, because it would not be possible to pull off if they do not believe in themselves.

Yeah we talk about it,” Luka Doncic said, via NBA TV. “I think the most important thing to show is we believe. I think we showed in Game 4. If we wouldn't believe, we probably wouldn't have won that game, so I think obviously it's easy to talk about it, but showing is another thing.”

The Mavericks disappointed in the first three games of the series, digging themselves a 3-0 hole against the best team in the league in the Celtics. This series was viewed as one that would be close due to how Doncic and Kyrie Irving have been playing in these playoffs.

Mavericks' recipe for historic 3-0 comeback vs Celtics

It might be too little, too late, but Game 4 was the recipe for success for the Mavericks, as they won 122-84. Doncic led the way with 29 points in the game, while Kyrie Irving put up 21 points, and Tim Hardaway Jr. and Dante Exum both put up double digits in points off the bench.

On top of that, the Mavericks turned in a stellar defensive performance to hold the Celtics to 84 points. It will be tougher for Dallas to replicate that performance on the road in Game 5, but if it can steal that game, the pressure starts to mount on the Celtics.

As mentioned before, the Celtics have been the best team in the NBA all season, winning 64 games in the regular season and not facing too much trouble throughout the Eastern Conference Playoffs. Boston took care of the Miami Heat and Cleveland Cavaliers in five games in the first two rounds, then went on to sweep the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals.

The Mavericks were viewed as the biggest test yet for Boston due to the duo of Doncic and Irving. Still, the Celtics likely feel good about having a chance to close out the series at home in Game 5, and most fans probably would have signed up for that scenario before the series started.

Due to coming into the playoffs and these NBA Finals as favorites, there is a lot of pressure on the Celtics' side. This group has been close to going all the way for Boston. Due to that, a loss in Game 5 would present a lot of nervousness for a Game 6 in Dallas.

As of right now, Doncic and the Mavericks have to focus on just winning Game 5 on Monday night.
