The Dallas Mavericks have had a relatively conservative stance over the ongoing free agency period. But they may be pushing for a move to acquire longtime veteran guard Goran Dragic.
On the first day of free agency, Dragic was shipped off to the Toronto Raptors as part of the notable sign-and-trade deal that sent Kyle Lowry to the Miami Heat. The Heat picked up Dragic's $19.4 million team option to facilitate the deal.
The deal has not yet been officially finalized, but the Raptors are already drawing plans on just what to do with Dragic ahead of the upcoming season.
As noted by Marc Stein's Substack newsletter on Friday, the Raptors currently prefer to trade Dragic rather than buying him out. The Raptors have already garnered notable trade interest from one team for Dragic: Dallas Mavericks.
The Mavericks made an early attempt to haul in Dragic via a trade but were unsuccessful. Still, even as Dragic is currently slated to feature with the Raptors this upcoming season, Dallas remains heavily interested in acquiring him, especially as the team would like to pair him up with Slovenian superstar Luka Doncic.
From Dragic's perspective, he is very much open to the possibility of playing with the Mavericks this season. He recently noted of his aspirations to finish off his NBA career by tagging alongside Doncic in Dallas.
The days of Dragic being a starting point guard in the NBA may be long over with. However, the one-time All-Star proved last season that he can still be a durable score-first guard in the league; he averaged 13.4 points per game over 50 games played in the season.
