Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks is now 11th on the NBA's all-time three-pointers list. The 40-year-old Nowitzki overtook Joe Johnson after he scored a season-high 30 points against the Phoenix Suns on April 9. Nowitzki made 11 of 31 shots from the field. Five of those made attempts were from three-point range. He also added three assists and eight rebounds in the 120-109 victory by the Mavs.

With Nowitzki's five triples against the Suns, he now has a career total of 1,979. The 10 players who precede him in the list of the NBA's all-time leaders for three-pointers made are Ray Allen (2,973), Reggie Miller (2,560), Stephen Curry (2,482), Kyle Korver (2,351), Jason Terry (2,282), Vince Carter (2,229), Jamal Crawford (2,213), Paul Pierce (2,143), James Harden (2,020), and Jason Kidd (1,988).

Nowitzki told The Dallas Morning News' Eddie Sefko that was his “last home game.” He will retire after spending his entire 21-year NBA career with the Mavs.

The Associated Press (via ESPN) describes the atmosphere at American Airlines Center in Dallas during Nowitzki's final home game.

A sellout crowd followed owner Mark Cuban's order of filling the arena early, and cheered from the first possible moment for the player who guided the Mavericks to their only championship eight years ago.

Fans stood during warmups, recording him in the layup line on their phones. The 7-foot German obliged with a dunk. The he had another dunk in the game — his second of the season — in the second half.

The wide smile as he ran down the floor was quite a contrast to the break between the first and second quarters. Nowitzki fought back tears near midcourt with the game about to restart after a tribute video detailing one of his holiday visits to a children's hospital.

Nowitzki, a sure-fire first-ballot Hall of Famer, is one of the best shooters the NBA has ever seen. He has averaged 20.7 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.4 assists in his NBA career. He will play in his final NBA game against the San Antonio Spurs on the road on April 10.
