The Dallas Mavericks were able to swing big in acquiring Christian Wood to team up with Luka Doncic earlier in the offseason. But they may be on the verge of taking an equally huge loss in Jalen Brunson.
With the New York Knicks making it common knowledge that they're moving heaven and earth to sign Jalen Brunson to a hefty offer sheet outright, the Mavs are said to be losing grip in the tug-of-war for the diminutive guard. According to NBA insider Jake Fischer from Bleacher Report, the whispers are indicating that to be the case:

“I really don't have like a ballpark on it, but from everything I've heard it really does sound like things have shifted and he's more likely than not becoming a member of the Knicks as opposed to the Dallas Mavericks. It really has sounded that things have shifted that direction.”
The Dallas Mavericks are in a tough situation if they end up losing Jalen Brunson. They don't have the cap space to acquire another player of his caliber, meaning they would essentially be losing Luka Doncic's best running mate for nothing with no other alternative than to match whatever offer north of $100 million that the Knicks are set to make.
The Mavs reportedly had several opportunities to extend Brunson for a fraction of the cost it would take now, but ultimately sat on their hands. Now they may face a future without him.
