After all the rumblings over the past few weeks, the expectation around the NBA is that Dallas Mavericks guard Jalen Brunson will be signing with the New York Knicks. However, another team is reportedly in play to sign the young guard: the Miami Heat.

The Heat have been mentioned as a dark horse candidate to sign Brunson after they scored a meeting with the playmaker when free agency opens on Thursday. As Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports noted, however, a deal with Miami for Brunson will require the help of the Mavs via sign and trade.

There is a darkhorse team in play: the Miami Heat, as they’ve secured a meeting, too, sources said. In order for the Heat to acquire Brunson, it would take a sign-and-trade agreement.

Now this is certainly an interesting turn of events. As reported earlier, the Mavs have pretty much resigned to the fact that Jalen Brunson is heading to New York without them getting anything in return. However if the Heat have as much interest on Brunson as New York and offered him a massive contract, Dallas could get some assets back.

Of course that remains along-shot and a big “What If,” especially with the Knicks going all-out for the rising star guard. They even made a flurry of moves to open up to $30 million in cap space to chase for the 25-year-old.

With the Heat coming into the equation, it remains to be seen what ends up happening for Jalen Brunson.
