Diamond Miller, a projected 2023 WNBA lottery pick, left No. 17 Maryland’s season opener after exiting the game with an apparent knee injury. Early in the second quarter, her knee buckled and she limped back to the locker room to be evaluated. However, Terrapins head coach Brenda Frese brushed off any concerns about the senior’s health after the game.
“It’s nothing too serious,” Frese said after the game. “We will continue to have her evaluated once we get back home but just more out of [precaution] — it’s a long season.”
Miller showed off in the first quarter why she is considered to be one of the gems in the WNBA draft next season. She started the game 3-for-4 from the field and notched 10 points before leaving the game.
Miller entered this season as one of the most intriguing players in college basketball. Her sophomore season put her on the map as someone who could thrive at the next level given her tall frame and athleticism on the wing. She averaged 17.3 points per game on the way to All-Big Ten First Team honors.
However, lower body injuries bothered her during her junior year and she needed to get surgery on her right knee last summer. Her production in 2021-22 went down but she still ended up on the All-Big Ten Second Team in a loaded conference.
Diamond Miller is going to be evaluated ahead of their matchup against No. 1 ranked South Carolina. Miller, who is 6-foot-3, is tied for being the tallest player on the team after Maryland lost Angel Reese to the transfer portal.
